In the module of 'Traditional Textiles of India,' students of Fashion Design at Woxsen University delved into the ancient art form of Kalamkari, a fascinating journey that honored both tradition and sustainability. Led by master artisan Mr. M. Munirathnam Pujari, who boasts 42 years of expertise and prestigious awards, students embarked on a two-day Kalamkari workshop.
The workshop illuminated the intricate process of Kalamkari, which involves 23 meticulous steps and utilizes natural dyes derived from ingredients like jaggery, anato flower, and tamarind tree branches for tools. Students were introduced to both Machilipatnam and Srikalahasti styles, with a focus on the latter's freehand drawing technique using a 'kalam' or pen.
Through hands-on learning, students gained appreciation for the artistry and dedication of Indian artisans, who painstakingly create motifs ranging from flora and fauna to mythological characters from Hindu epics. By embracing Kalamkari's sustainable practices and chemical-free materials, students not only learned a new art form but also developed a deeper understanding of the importance of preserving cultural heritage while minimizing harm to nature.
