Woxsen University's School of Arts and Design had the honor of hosting Prof. Joan Marie Kelly from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, for an insightful discussion on employing sensory community-based methodologies as research tools. Prof. Kelly's visit provided an invaluable opportunity for students and faculty to delve into innovative approaches to understanding communities and their needs.
During her visit, Prof. Kelly shared an intriguing example of using drawing as a method to gather insights into how Thai villagers perceive the development of their village. Through a simple yet powerful exercise, villagers were asked to create drawings depicting their village as it exists presently and how they envision it in the future. The juxtaposition of these drawings offered a fascinating glimpse into the community's hopes, aspirations, and concerns regarding their village's development trajectory.
This approach underscores the importance of engaging communities directly in the research process and leveraging creative methods to elicit rich, nuanced insights. By embracing sensory community-based methodologies, researchers can gain a deeper understanding of community dynamics, preferences, and aspirations, ultimately informing more contextually relevant and impactful interventions.
Prof. Kelly's visit served as a catalyst for stimulating discussions and reflections within the School of Arts and Design, inspiring students and faculty to explore new avenues of research and creative inquiry. As we continue to seek innovative solutions to real-world challenges, the insights shared by Prof. Kelly will undoubtedly inform and enrich our approach to community engagement and research methodologies in the future.
